Bad news for those who have been going to the SOVA METRO LOCATION. The landlord raised the rent to unaffordable and that location will close in a couple weeks..
Beginning in JULY 2016 there will be expanded hours at the other TWO EXISTING LOCATIONS in VAN NUYS and at PICO-ROBINSON.
SOVA NEEDS A JEWISH PHILANTHROPIST TO BUY THEM A BUILDING! Come on! We keep reading about Jewish Philanthropists in the Jewish Journal. Millions going out of the country to Israel. Philanthropists who are REAL ESTATE WEALTHY (while little to no affordable housing is being built.) You'd think the GUILT FACTOR WOULD KICK IN and SOMEBODY would step forward and BUY SOVA A BUILDING.
The location at 16439 VANOWEN STREET at Vanowen and Havenhurst WILL BE OPEN SUNDAY MONDAY TUESDAY WEDNESDAY and THURSDAY starting July 5th.

SOVA NEEDS JEWISH PHILANTHOPIST TO BUY THEM A BUILDING FOR FOOD BANK AND SERVICES to REPLACE CLOSING METRO LOCATION

SOVA FOOD BANKS - LOST FUNDING MEANS RESTRICTED SERVICE AREAS and NO MORE FOOD FOR HOMELESS - PANTRY CLOSED FRIDAYS
SOVA - a service of Jewish Family Services of Los Angeles, has lost enough funding to restrict the location areas and cut another day off the week for food distribution. Starting in July, all SOVA recipients must show a utility bill or other documentation of their address to prove they are in one of the zip codes SOVA will provide service to.
THIS MEANS THAT THE HOMELESS CANNOT USE SOVA SERVICES, because a PHOTO ID, while asked for, is not considered proof of where a person is living, and homeless do not have utility bills coming to their RV's or sleeping bags.
Acceptable are:
payroll check stub,
utility or phone bill
credit card or bank statement
mortgage bill
rent receipt with landlord's signature
government benefits check
current year jury summons
current year property tax bill or motor vehicle registration
SOVA has three locations METRO (La Brea Ave.) VALLEY ( San Fernando Valley -Van Nuys) and WEST (Pico-Robertson), all three areas having large Jewish populations. However, food is not restricted to Jewish people, though they do provide Kosher food when requested.
THE MAP of locations served is still HUGE, and to be fair, other food banks do also restrict by ZIP CODE, so what may be happening here is that people will have to find the food bank that serves their address.
NEW HOURS AND DAYS
SUNDAYS 9:00- 12:00 METRO and VALLEY OPEN
MONDAY 10:00-1:30 METRO and VALLEY OPEN
TUESDAYS 10:00-1:30 METRO and VALLEY OPEN
WEDNESDAYS 10:00-1:30 PM METRO and WEST OPEN
THURSDAYS 10:00-1:30 PM VALLEY and WEST OPEN
ALL LOCATIONS CLOSED FRIDAYS and SATURDAYS.

FOOD FORWARD - THE GLEAN TEAM
FOOD FORWARD ORG Known for their fruit pickers, we've blogged about this organization before. They are working with three LA farmers markets - Santa Monica and Hollywood and Studio City to glean produce that goes unsold. They get the veggies.
100% of what is Donated goes to SOVA and MEND and other food pantries.
THEY CAN USE VOLUNTEERS. IT'S A GREAT WAY TO QUIT THE GYM and MEET SOME PEOPLE.

HUNGRY 24/7 BY SUSAN FREUDENHEIM - JEWISH JOURNAL - MAZON - SOVA
" - right now, one in six Americans is living with food insecurity — which means they either are constantly at risk of being without their next meal or living with disrupted food patterns. This shocking number comes from a study just released by Feeding America, a food-relief organization. These people do not choose to be hungry. And here are some even more stark statistics: • 17 million of America’s children live with food insecurity.• Only 10 percent of the 50 million are homeless.• About 36 percent of food-insecure families include one working adult...MAZON — which Charity Navigator has just raised to four stars, its highest rating for philanthropies — has just begun a promising new initiative to explore ways to distribute more fresh foods. Created in partnership with Kaiser Permanente, the program is called “Healthy Options/Healthy Meals” and is initially funding 12 food banks around the nation, helping them explore ways to make healthy and nutritious food more available to populations with specific needs, such as the elderly.

SOVA RESOURCE CENTERS - NEW LOCATION METRO in WEST HOLLYWOOD
SOVA is a really cool place. If you're homeless or destitute this is a place you can go that is run pretty much by volunteers, and though it gets a little crazy, our experience is that you're dealing with real people (not case managers with Masters Degrees who think you're a statistic.) We've posted them before but we're doing so again because you may not know about their new location, METRO - located in West Hollywood at 1140 North La Brea Avenue, West Hollywood, CA 90038
The METRO pantry is located on the east side of La Brea.
Metered parking is available on La Brea as well as on surrounding streets.
You can bus there on MTA.

SOVA GIVES OUT 850 CHICKENS (and the fixings) THANKS TO REPUBLIC SERVICES
SOVA Food Bank located on Vanowen and Havenhurst in the San Fernando Valley, gave out 850 chickens (along with corn, stuffing, yams, cranberry sauces, etc.) yesterday in a major give out that had hundreds standing in line. REPUBLIC SERVICES - a RECYCLING and WASTE COLLECTION company provided the chickens.
Homeless and Low Income people who benefited want to thank SOVA and REPUBLIC SERVICES. We're linking to that company above. We think it's interesting because so many homeless recycle for money.

SUSAN FREUDENHEIM OF THE JEWISH JOURNAL LOS ANGELES REPORTS ON FOOD INSECURITY
A portion of this article :
On Yom Kippur, we fast to focus our minds. We give up food for 25 hours as a mitzvah, but it is also our choice.
That’s not the situation for more than 50 million Americans — right now, one in six Americans is living with food insecurity — which means they either are constantly at risk of being without their next meal or living with disrupted food patterns. This shocking number comes from a study just released by Feeding America, a food-relief organization. These people do not choose to be hungry.
And here are some even more stark statistics:
• 17 million of America’s children live with food insecurity.
• Only 10 percent of the 50 million are homeless.
• About 36 percent of food-insecure families include one working adult.
This problem is rampant in a country that prides itself on being one of the most affluent in the world.
WE ARE ADDING MAZON - A JEWISH RESPONSE TO HUNGER ON OUR SIDEBAR UNDER FOOD.

JULIE CRUENBAUM FAX, The JEWISH JOURNAL, on SOVA
In the November 20-26, 2009 Jewish Journal of Los Angeles
"About 1.2 million people in Los Angeles County are food insecure..."
ONE PERSON IN 8 in Los Angeles faces hunger.
"According to the 2003 UCLA Health Policy Research study that analyzed data from California Health Interview Survey. The study DID NOT COUNT CHILDREN, HOMELESS, and THOSE WITHOUT PHONES, estimated at around 400,000."
SOVA link above. SOVA is a Jewish word that means eat to be satisfied.
