KFI - BILL HANDEL - WEB PAGE HERE! On air: Weekdays 5 - 9 a.m. Call / Text: 1-800-520-1KFI / 640640 Email: bill@kfi640.com
Who says we aren't fair? We've been on the back of KFI radio which we've called 50,000 WATTS OF IGNORANCE, not so long ago and often we listen to the radio, especially early morning radio.
Friday morning, August 2nd, 2013, while talking about fast food workers striking around the country, we actually heard Handel express support for the LIVING WAGE!
Since some of us use EBT for Fast Food at places like Jack In A Box, Subway, and Pizza Hut, and are grateful to have a hot meal, even then we know that so many people are ONE PAYCHECK AWAY FROM HOMELESSNESS and that some of the people who make the burgers and sandwiches and pies could be next.
People really do need to afford $1000 a month average rent for a one bedroom apartment in most of Southern California and on minimum wage if you're young and single you're going to have to rent a room, live with a lot of people, maybe family or roommates, or live in your van or RV.
We're even meeting employed people who have the retirement plan of living in a Van or RV so that they can save up money to move to another city like maybe Detroit, where there are supposed to be houses for $1.
Bill's understanding that it takes about $18 an hour to live is right on.
We think GREEDY LANDLORDS are the number #1 reason why people who shouldn't be, because they are working or have worked for years, are homeless. WE ALSO SEE WHAT THE GREEDY LANDLORDS ARE DOING TO SECTION 8!
So Bill, we hope you and some of the more ignorant but intelligent members of KFI staff, will read us! (We think you do!)

TOM AMMIANO'S HOMELESS BILL OF RIGHTS MOVES FORWARD TOWARD ASSEMBLY COMMITTEE ON APPROPRIATIONS
RAW STORY : HOMELESS BILL OF RIGHTS link - one of many stories hitting the Internet this morning. See below for our commentary on Bill Handel, KFI Radio's, commentary this morning.

The bill, introduced by Assemblyman Tom Ammiano of San Francisco, would allow homeless people in California to legally sit, sleep and ask for donations in public without the threat of being arrested or cited. The bill would also allow homeless to reside in parks 24/7, regardless of their operating hours.
Ammiano explained the bill’s primary goal was to stop the criminalization of homelessness. Bill supporter and Coalition on Homelessness organizer Lisa Marie Alatorre told the SF Examiner:
“This bill calls for the immediate end of criminalizing homelessness. We need to stop allowing that to be our response to economic problems.”
The proposal lays out a “bill of rights” for people who are homeless including the right to:
“… move freely, rest, solicit donations, pray, meditate, or practice religion, and to eat, share, accept, or give food and water in public spaces without being subject to criminal or civil sanctions, harassment or arrest.”
If passed, the state would also be required to set up “health and hygiene centers” to provide showers and restrooms for the homeless 24 hours a day. Additionally, legal assistance must be available for anyone issued a citation for an activity related to their housing status.
While the state would foot the bill for these costs, the final price tag is still not known. Ammiano told the committee:
“Citations, arrests and jail time do not solve homelessness. They just route crucial public dollars that could be spent on housing to an already impacted court and corrections system.”
The new proposal would override San Francisco’s sit-lie ordinance passed in 2010 by voters. Sit-lie ordinances, though, would remain enforceable in cities that meet certain criteria, including having available public housing and have not been identified as “an area of concentrated unemployment.”
But sit-lie ordinances would be enforceable if strict criteria are met: the county provides adequate welfare assistance, the city isn’t identified by the U.S. Department of Labor as an area of concentrated unemployment, and the county’s public housing waiting list contains fewer than 50 people.
Assemblyman Donald Wagner, who voted against the bill Tuesday, told the committee:
“The homeless situation in San Francisco is going to be very much different from the homeless situation in Fresno, Los Angeles or central Orange County. By Sacramento passing this law, it doesn’t allow those cities to fix their own problems.”
While many local governments and business groups are in opposition of the bill, they’re probably thankful the current amended version of the bill no longer includes the controversial provision that would have legalized public urination by the homeless.
The legislation, passed by the Assembly Judiciary Committee with a 7-2 vote, will now head to the Assembly Committee on Appropriations...

We heard the news as part of Bill Handel's Commentary on KFI this morning. He mentioned that people say to him that he hates the homeless. Well, we did get the impression, but we think Bill is mostly IGNORANT like a lot of people who rarely come in contact with homeless. As a lawyer Bill has legal knowledge that a lot of people don't have. He mentioned that this comes down to being a revenue issue. He mentioned that while SIDEWALKS are public property, what does a business owner do when some homeless guy is peeing on the sidewalk in front of your business. He also mentioned that Amiano sees this as a HUMANITARIAN ISSUE and so there will be LOCAL HYGIENE STATIONS open 24 hours a day so that homeless can have a place to wash, pee, whatever.
Needless to say we are all for THE HOMELESS BILL OF RIGHTS and feel grateful that Tom Ammiano had the guts to bring up the issue. He is representing ALL THE PEOPLE including HOMELESS PEOPLE, who are usually THE POOREST OF THE POOR. He's right that people who were never criminals are considered criminals just because they have nowhere else to go. Homeless people are transient because they are moved along by police wherever they go. Being harrassed from one community to the next, trying to stay out of trouble means walking till you can't walk anymore, going hungry or panhandling for money to feed yourself, and being under constant stress. Then some people yell at you to go get a job.

BROADCASTER BILL HANDEL - KFI RADIO - SENSITIVITY RATING GOING UP
Successful KFI radio broadcaster Bill Handel has taken some well deserved criticism from us.
KFI is a station with a big range and Bill's got influence. We were upset when he joked that he and his brother baited homeless people with five dollar bills. Bill is however getting more sensitive to the homeless because he has learned that an old friend of his is on the street. Bill recently mentioned the WAR ON POVERTY as over. We have a video at the bottom of this blog on the WAR OF POVERTY as well as inaugural speeches by various U.S. Presidents concerning human rights.
We'd like KFI, which broadcasts out of Burbank, California, to get more activated when it comes to homeless and poverty issues in Burbank.
The myth about Burbank is that, since the movie studios moved in and started paying taxes and shopping areas have been revitalized, there is no poverty or homelessness in Burbank. Some people say Burbank Police throw homeless over the border into LA City territory. Worst of all, Burbank does not want any homeless shelters in the city and does not want the United States Armory, located near the Fry's near the airport to be used as a winter shelter. (As usual, the homeowners are offended.) All of which, as we see it, goes to prove the point that poor people are more generous than rich.

LOS ANGELES COUNTY HOUSING : CRIMINAL BACKGROUND NO LONGER AN OBSTACLE IN SOME CASES
We heard this breaking news on KFI in the morning and we sure hope that Bill Handle and his staff that have had so much fun about homeless people are now a little more sensitive (see past posts on KFI!)
"Supervisors approve a plan allowing some parolees and probationers the first chance at Section 8 vouchers for federal housing. Officials say the rule seeks to aid low-level offenders" ...
"The housing authority is required by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to update its program goals, policies and financial resources every year. Four of five Los Angeles County supervisors last week approved the agency's revised plan.Among other changes, the new plan waives a long-standing ban on homeless probationers and parolees obtaining housing subsidies and cuts the criminal history review period for such applicants from three years to two.Critics of the revision charge that it is unfair to give criminals a chance to find affordable shelter before other needy people, such as senior citizens and the disabled. There are an estimated 191,000 individuals on a waiting list for vouchers, according to housing authority data."
LEAVE COMMENTS! WE KNOW SOME OF YOU WHO ARE WAITING FOR SECTION 8 VOUCHERS AND NO CRIMINAL HISTORY ARE PISSED OFF! According to Bill Handle show, these vouchers will be used not just for any landlord but in buildings considered to be projects (our words.)

BILL HANDEL : KFI : THE JOKES ON THE HOMELESS : HANDEL AND STAFF NEED A LESSON IN HOMELESSNESS
A few days ago, shortly after 5 am in the morning when the Bill Handel show begins on KFI radio, Bill had a real joke to tell about the homeless. HA HA HA HA HA! His dummy staff chimed in behind him.
Without any sensitivity at all, which is Handel's Hallmark, he began to deride homeless people, as drunks and beggars, who use the handouts they receive only for alcohol. Handel added that it was a FAMILY CHARACTERISTIC to bait homeless beggars with five dollar bills. He said this was what his brother did, and of course we homeless, when we see five dollar bills our eyes get real wide. Oh yes sir, do we want that five dollar bill.
When we heard that we thought of the stereotype that used to play of blacks; their eyes got real big too didn't they?
Of course it is cheap to deride people who are picked on and often defenseless and have to hide to survive. Handel and staff are PART OF THE SAME PROBLEM that allows teenagers to beat the living hell out of homeless.
It has been 40 degrees at night this past week in many parts of Los Angeles, colder where the wind blows, and it's been raining. Handel and his staff have apparently never spent a night standing under an overhang trying to stay dry and warm. Handel and his staff apparently do not know that while many homeless are drug addicted or alcoholic, the majority are not.
Handel and his jokey staff need to spend a week out in the cold, sleeping on cement (personally we don't think they could even handle (ha ha!) sleeping on a cot in a cold weather shelter for a week. They should do so with five dollars in their pockets, no ID, no access to food without locating and attending feeds, and try out the humiliation some of us feel to have to beg for our meal or for the bus fare to get to the next one. They should feel what it's like to go a week without a shower. They should pick their clothes off giveaway tables. They should find themselves thrown out of (or asked to leave) restaurants and coffee houses, where they are trying to have a meal, because they stink.
WE INVITE BILL HANDEL AND HIS STAFF to read this blog so they won't think IGNORANCE IS FUNNY OR EVEN ACCEPTABLE broadcasting on their 50,000 watt station.
GO TO HELL HANDEL!
Thanks Buffy for letting us know we spelled his name wrong in the original post. We've also decided to link to his official site so you can see what he looks like and maybe contact him yourself!
