Urban Angels also assists with feeding services every Wednesday at The Salvation Army.

We like it when volunteers actually interact with homeless people. Although some people think this is because volunteers need to know that homeless people are human beings, it's also because some homeless people need to know that volunteers are human beings. After experiencing a lot of rejection, censure, and discrimination, homeless are no longer sure.

BURBANK IKEA FREE BREAKFAST ON MONDAY MORNINGS ATTRACTS AREA SENIOR CITIZENS AND LOCAL HOMELESS
IKEA, the furniture and home fashions store, situated in Burbank, California, has an event every Monday morning. The regular 99 cent breakfast is free, if you become a Ikea member the coffee is always free. So any other day of the week you pay only 99 Cents for scrambled eggs, potato, and a couple sausages.
We decided to go undercover and have a volunteer investigate to find out if there really is a free breakfast and if the place is "full of homeless."
Our first encounter with another shopper was with a person who said they were a liberal and in teaching but that "all these homeless people" eating free was giving a "wrong message."
So we looked around, expecting to see a lot of people who were clearly street homeless, dirty, stinky, possibly carrying garbage in with them - you know the stereotype.
To our surprise and pleasure we were there for over an hour before we spotted any Burbank homeless that we know of. Otherwise we saw that there were a great number of senior citizens - most likely on a budget - and that even the homeless we know of were clean and neat. We think that IKEA does this breakfast to attract shoppers on a slow day but the event appears to also be a community service.
Later, sitting with one of Burbank's senior citizens sitting alone till we arrived, we learned that many local seniors high-tail it over to IKEA to socialize together and keep within their food budgets.
IKEA has donated to homeless causes in the past. For instance, Ikea provided furnishings for one of Los Angeles Family Housing's HUD/ Mental Health voucher building projects where the spare modern designs worked well with concrete floors.
IKEA has a number of other low priced food items for sale during the breakfast and at other times during the day including muffins, corn bread, and their Swedish meatballs.
We hope the store will keep it up.

SELLING EBT- SNAP CALFRESH - FOR CASH - IT HAPPENS! HOW AND WHY!
Selling and buying EBT - SNAP (government food benefits that used to be called Food Stamps and is also known in California as CalFresh) is not supposed to happen but it's happening. Officially you can get into big trouble if caught. But we get so many hits on our posts about such things, we thought we should say more about it.
People simply need the cash for any number of things including over the counter medication (who can afford a trip all the way to an emergency room just to get sent away hours later with over the counter medication?), sanitary supplies (easily $10 a month), shoes (wear out fast when you have to walk everywhere), new underwear and socks and bras (rarely given out at clothing giveaways or available at thrift shops and besides at thrift stores there are never dressing rooms for try ons and who can afford to spend the money when there are no returns), gas for their vehicle, stamps and postal box fees...you name it... not just cigarettes, beer, drugs.
OK so here is the slippery slope of trading food benefits for other goods.
1) NOT FRAUD!
A family member or friend who is doing way better than you actually invites you over for a party or meal and you want to contribute something. So you go shopping with them and then use your EBT -SNAP to pay for some groceries. You get to eat some of what you bought and some of what they provided. We feel no guilt. But we will have to go to a food bank to make up for it.
This is a lot like living at a shelter that serves one, two, or three meals a day to residents. Sure if you stay there all day every day you will eat, but you might not get enough food, healthy food, and what happens when you need to get out and go? (APPLY FOR EBT if you are not on SSI/SSDI etc.)
2) MAYBE
Someone at the shelter has a car and you ask them to give you a ride. They say you have to pay gas and you have no money for gas so instead you offer to buy them groceries in exchange. Maybe a tuna salad and some cola on your card. The exchange is pretty even. A couple gallons of gas to get you where you need to go. We feel no guilt.
3) VERY LIKELY
You go shopping with someone specifically to pay for their groceries and then they look at the receipt and give you the amount just spent in cash. (A great deal by the way! We hear of people giving 24% of the total so they are basically buying their own groceries real cheap.)
4) TOTALLY ILLEGAL on YOUR PART and that of the MERCHANTS.
You go into a store - usually an independently owned corner store where the owner will give you a certain percentage of cash based on your purchase. Basically you put, say $20 of retail groceries on your EBT which they bought wholesale and they KEEP the groceries and get to sell them again. How much do you get? We hear as low as 25 cents on the dollar, meaning that for the $20 in cash you may have to "buy" groceries worth $80. Seeing what a raw deal this is, you can tell a person is desperate for cash. However, some people find this better - more sure and less humiliating or risky with the police - than begging or panhandling.
5) TOTALLY ILLEGAL on YOUR PART and that of the BUYER.
You place an ad on a Craigs List type Internet sales and trading place saying you have a card for sale. When the buyer arrives you hand over your card, give them the pin number, they give you the cash agreed upon and go buy groceries at what is usually a big discount for them. (Wouldn't going to a food bank be a better option to supplement grocery buying?) Then you go to your social services and claim that you lost the card or it was stolen from you. Really bad karma!

FORT LAUDERDALE CRIMINALIZES CHRISTIANITY - 3 ARRESTED FOR FEEDING THE HOMELESS - SHAME ON FORT LAUDERDALE!
ABC 7 - 90 YEAR OLD CHARGED FOR FEEDING HOMELESS PEOPLE
EXCERPT:
Abbott and two pastors in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, were charged for feeding the homeless in public on Sunday, the city's first crackdowns under a new ordinance banning public food sharing, CNN affiliate WPLG reported.
Now they face possible jail time and a $500 fine, WPLG said.
Despite some criticism from homeless advocates, city officials have vowed the new rules will be enforced.
"Just because of media attention we don't stop enforcing the law. We enforce the laws here in Fort Lauderdale," Mayor Jack Seiler told WPLG.
He defended the law in an interview with the Sun-Sentinel newspaper.
"I'm not satisfied with having a cycle of homeless in the city of Fort Lauderdale," Seiler said. "Providing them with a meal and keeping them in that cycle on the street is not productive."
(HEY SEILER WHERE DO YOU PLAN TO SEND THESE PEOPLE?)
But Abbott, who has been helping feed homeless people in the area through his Love Thy Neighbor nonprofit since 1991, said authorities are targeting the city's most vulnerable residents.
"These are the poorest of the poor. They have nothing. They don't have a roof over their head," he said. "Who can turn them away?"
Recently, the city has also passed an ordinance limiting the storage of personal property in public, WPLG said. Then came the restrictions for food sharing.
"The city passed an ordinance requiring us to have a Porta-Potty. It's ridiculous. The whole thing was designed to rid Fort Lauderdale of its homeless," Abbott said. "Police told me anyone who touches a pan ... anyone who is involved, will be arrested."
It's a battle Abbott has fought before. In 1999 he sued the city for banning him from feeding homeless people on the beach -- and won, according to WPLG.

YALE TRINITY CHURCH ON THE GREEN PROVIDES FOOD AND HOLY EUCHARIST
YALE DAILY NEWS - UPCLOSE HAVEN FOR HOMELESS
Paul and Kirk Bacon are among the 767 homeless men, women and children in New Haven, many of whom count on Chapel on the Green for lunch on Sundays. In 2008, Trinity Church on the Green collaborated with other local agencies to provide a brief Holy Eucharist service followed by a meal...
Yale is known as an institution replete with wealth and prestige, but its position in the heart of New Haven brings urban issues like homelessness to the forefront of students’ daily lives. Last year’s homelessness Point in Time count found that New Haven’s homeless population is nearly double of that in other Connecticut towns of comparable size, like Bridgeport and Stamford. It is also significantly larger than that in other Ivy League towns, including Cambridge and Princeton.
All 25 undergraduates interviewed said that panhandlers asked them for money more than once a month, and more than half of those students said that panhandlers approach them on a daily basis. Even though students do not typically discuss these encounters with their peers, they said grappling with this visible manifestation of income inequality is difficult.

SAN FERNANDO RESCUE MISSION SHELTER AND FOOD SERVICES DESTROYED IN FIRE - HAVES SHOULD DONATE NOW
DAILY NEWS : NORTH HOLLYWOOD HOMELESS SHELTER BURNS TO THE GROUND picture of firemen fighting blaze.
"The displaced residents, from seven or eight families, were being housed in emergency shelter provided by the American Red Cross, the mission’s Stacy Miller said.
About 60 percent of the shelter’s residents are children under the age of 12, she said.
In addition to the facility’s residences, the warehouse hub for the mission’s three thrift stores was also destroyed, Miller said. That effectively eliminates the sales that provide 50 percent of the shelter’s annual revenue.
The blaze also destroyed the mission’s food preparation area, where 42,000 meals were put together each year, and its fleet of vehicles, which provide meals and mobile showers to 1,700 people each month through an outreach program called S.O.S., she said.
“Our ability to do that is ruined,” Miller said."

GREATER WEST HOLLYWOOD FOOD COALITION - 25 YEARS OF FEEDING HOMELESS AND HUNGRY "I AM MY BROTHER'S KEEPER"
GREATER WEST HOLLYWOOD FOOD COALITION FEEDS
Every night between 6:15 and 7:30 a community comes together at the barren street corner of Sycamore and Romaine, along the border of Hollywood and West Hollywood. On the one hand – on one side of the table – are the volunteers of The Greater West Hollywood Food Coalition, a broad-based grass-roots organization which for the past 25 years has served a hot, fresh, and nutritious meal every night to the homeless and hungry. On the other hand are between 150 and 200 men and women who have somehow or other fallen through the cracks, and for whom the meal they are about to eat, sumptuous as it is, might well be the only meal they have all day. The GWHFC is comprised of actors, producers, writers, artists, teachers, journalists, lawyers, housewives, and a corps of former “clients” who have all had a strong desire to give back by volunteering in Los Angeles. Serving a meal to the “homeless and hungry” is the smallest part of what we do. We meet them on their own turf, talk to them, and listen. We get to know them as individuals, and, little by little, in all kinds of ways, we then help them to think better of themselves and to not be shy about asking for specific, practical help – which the Greater West Hollywood Food Coalition, entirely unsystematically, then tries to provide.
LOS ANGELES MAY END PUBLIC FEEDINGS. We think this is ridiculous. It will mean that individuals and charities HAVE TO RENT SPACE TO SPONSOR A FEED raising the cost to feed people. MOST OF ALL THIS IS AN ATTEMPT TO HIDE POVERTY IN AMERICA...

CHRISTMAS FEEDS - THE ONE DAY YOU ARE SURE TO HAVE A MEAL
It's CHRISTMAS DAY... The one day when just about any homeless can find a place to have a good hot meal, because the missions and Churches see to it that Jesus' birth is celebrated. It's a feel good day for the volunteers and the photos of rows of unshaven "bums" sitting at long tables and eating like there is no tomorrow will grace next years solicitation for funds.
We don't have anything against feeding people. We know a lot of housed people go hungry because all the money in the household goes to paying the rent. But we think that food is easier to obtain than the proper clothing for a job interview, or a free hair cut and color, or many of the other things we need to smell good, be neat and clean, well groomed and fashionable enough to pass as an employee until we are hired and can actually afford a work wardrobe, and so on.
The word HOMELESS applied to anyone makes them unemployable, a MERCY HIRE!
What we need are JOBS!
