If you are just out of rehab or living in a shelter, you may want to pair up with someone form the San Fernando Valley Hospitals and Institutions Committee (H and I).  These A.A. member volunteers will help you if you are leaving rehab, treatment, jail, hospital, and other institutions which usually includes homeless shelters.

If you know that alcohol is a problem for you, especially if it's the problem that lead you towards homelessness, please know that there are even psychologists and therapists who won't consider treating someone who isn't also in A.A.  A.A. has a decades long proven track record for helping people get off and stay off drink.  They are also a well attended and respected NETWORKING CLUB.

On our HOW TO BE A GOOD ROOM MATE PAGE we mention that YOU SHOULD BE WORKING ON YOURSELF as a focus rather than SITTING OUT GOSSIPING.  If you're in a shelter, you should be using your time there for SELF IMPROVEMENT and getting control of your eating is important.  So, you're overeating or eating bad foods may mean being overweight and overweight leads to bad health and discrimination against the overweight.

RUMOR REACHES US OF HOMELESS RESOURCES COMPETITOR OUT TO GET US!

Competitor?  For POVERTY ACTIVISTS there may be differences of opinion but if you're on the same side of the issue, wanting to eliminate poverty and homelessness, are you actually competing?

A rumor reached us that an individual staying at San Fernando Valley shelter that you've read about in these posts has a HOMELESS RESOURCES web site which takes contributions of money has been putting us down.  Meanwhile, the story goes, this person is applying for and taking Government Benefits and not reporting the money.
...

It's not like we aren't aware that there are lists of homeless resources to be found other places.  In fact there are just so many lists of resources.

We hope that what we have to offer here is MORE THAN the lists.  It's real easy to pretend that each and every homeless shelter or resource provider actually has a heart, has our best interests in mind, and DOES EXACTLY WHAT THEY CLAIM TO DO WHEN THEY TAKE CONTRIBUTIONS.

MOST OF THE HOMELESS RESOURCE PLACES PRIDE THEMSELVES IN HANDING OVER LISTS OF OTHER RESOURCES - often out of date information or repetitive since they have PHOTOCOPIED pages of the same lists.   There are also medical clinics that claim to help the homeless but who do not advocate but who basically think they are helping because they 'send" people to another organization.  You can do a whole hell of a lot of go-sees trying to get help.

When we've told some these places that there was inaccurate information on their lists, well, months go by and they don't correct the list.  One Burbank location had a shelter listed in North Hollywood that had gone out of business more than 2 years before!  One food bank gave us a list and half the places we called had changed info.

It's not easy to keep up with all the changes.

WE THINK THAT SOME ORGANIZATIONS HAVE NON-PROFIT STATUS AND TAKE DONATIONS JUST SO THEY CAN REFER PEOPLE SOMEWHERE ELSE.

Then there is 211 or 311 phone help lines or one of those 800 numbers where you can call and get the latest information.  Supposedly.  One person we know called 211 and followed through calling 5 referrals who were supposed to have furniture.  None did.  It was all misinformation.

As much as we want to help you, we know that information can go out of date quickly, so while we hope that you'll find a link to that help when you need it, WE HOPE WE WILL INSPIRE YOU TO KEEP ON ASKING QUESTIONS, KEEP ON MAKING THOSE PHONE CALLS, KEEP ON SHOWING UP FOR THOSE INTERVIEWS, while knowing how difficult, exhausting, and numbing that is.  We do want your comments, suggestions, testimonials, and updates!

NAMI - NATIONAL ALLIANCE ON MENTAL ILLNESS : SUPPORT FOR FAMILIES

NAMI offers programs that include SUPPORT GROUPS, 12 week courses for family caregivers, peer to peer groups and a speaker series for people and their family members and partners who are suffering from Major Depression, Schizophrenia, Manic Depression, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Panic Disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and (pleeeeese!) Borderline Personality Disorder (what you may be diagnosed with when they can't figure out anything else?)

We think there is a lot of over diagnosis and misdiagnosis, and that for instance, "personality disorders" are sometimes just part of the whole "everyone is diagnosable and everyone is medicatable" psychology b.s.

(What unlicensed but practicing as an MFCC person is known as the King or Queen of Personality Disorders operating out of a homeless clinic in the San Fernando Valley and delivering reports to shelters?)

Some people really are mentally ill, maybe you, maybe a family member, maybe someone who is homeless as a result, or maybe you're homeless because you went broke trying to save somebody who can't be saved? Maybe malingering by your medical care people or living on the street or a shelter made you crazy?

So you can call (818) 994-6747 in the San Fernando Valley or Santa Clarita, or link here to their site and found out how and if NAMI help you.

Among the "suspicious" behaviors that might indicated Major mental illness include withdrawal from society or isolation, confused or delusional thinking, hallucinations, strange or grandiose ideas, prolonged or severe depression (warning, ads on TV paid for by pharmacutical companies would suggest this is more than 2 weeks of depression - more bs!), excessive anxiety (are they even considering the situation you're living in - who decides what is "excessive?), mood swings (ditto), suicidal thoughts or behavior, changes in appetite, sleep disturbances (ever try sleeping in a shelter?), increased use of alcohol or drugs (self medicating).

OK, if your brother or sister are on the street with a mental illness (often schizophrenia) you may need this group.

SOVA GIVES OUT 850 CHICKENS (and the fixings) THANKS TO REPUBLIC SERVICES

SOVA Food Bank located on Vanowen and Havenhurst in the San Fernando Valley, gave out 850 chickens (along with corn, stuffing, yams, cranberry sauces, etc.) yesterday in a major give out that had hundreds standing in line. REPUBLIC SERVICES - a RECYCLING and WASTE COLLECTION company provided the chickens.

Homeless and Low Income people who benefited want to thank SOVA and REPUBLIC SERVICES. We're linking to that company above. We think it's interesting because so many homeless recycle for money.

CHILD ABUSE UP 10% in LOS ANGELES COUNTY

"Calls to the Child Abuse Hotline jumped from 39,611 in the first half of last year to 43,693 in the same period this year.

Department of Children and Family Services Director Trish Ploehn said she believes the increase in calls is a combination of two factors: the economic stress on families being taken out on children and greater awareness of abuse from news coverage of child deaths.

"I believe the recession and the stress caused by poverty, unemployment, homelessness and two or three families having to move into one home are all starting to take their toll," Ploehn said.
