OUR WISH LIST FOR THE NEW YEAR - CAN WE EVEN HOPE FOR THESE CHANGES?
WE WISH, we wish...
1) That HOUSING FIRST would end the need for any (temporary) shelter stay over 6 months. (HEAR THAT POLITICIANS?)
2) That all authorities and social services, including the United Way Run hot lines that do intake when people need emergency housing, WOULD STOP DEFINING "CHRONIC HOMELESSNESS' as a mere six months. Six months is nothing. A wait to get into a shelter can be years and many shelter programs also take YEARS to provide vouchers or other housing options. (Some of us do not think of ourselves as homeless once in a shelter to housing transitional program.)
3) That COLD WEATHER SHELTERS in cities with huge homeless populations such as LOS ANGELES would be open ALL YEAR LONG, since there are WAIT LISTS for housing programs, and people who stay at them all winter fear the closing date (usually mid March) when they will have to sleep rough. Instead of being called COLD WEATHER SHELTERS they should be called SAFETY SHELTERS. (And your safety there should be a priority)
4) That no shelter or program would get any money or credit for their INTAKE NUMBERS. Intake stats often have nothing to do with the numbers of people they help.
5) That shelters that make "clients" or "residents" SIGN a CONTRACT WITH THEM would also SIGN A LEGAL CONTRACT THAT THEY WILL GET HOUSING for that"client" or "resident." and in a specific number of months. (It's usually totally one sided.)
6) That no LUXURY APARTMENT BUILDINGS be built within Los Angeles County, until there is a low income apartment for every low income resident! In this city thousands live in abusive relationships, have sex with people they don't really like, sofa hop between a half dozen friends, are crammed into illegal housing and car garages and even STORAGE UNITS, all so they can avoid actually being on the street, and many are working but do not make enough to live in even a small single apartment. (We know someone who continued to work as a secretary while living under a freeway underpass in a tent city.)
7) That any employee of a shelter or nonprofit that gets caught having sex with a "client" or "resident", is sexually harassing, commits fraud or encourages that homeless person to commit fraud in order to get government benefits, especially under threat of being kicked out, or who embezzles funds not just be fired, BUT BE CHARGED WITH THE CRIME, GO THROUGH A TRIAL, and GO TO PRISON WHEN CONVICTED. (TAKE THE HINT LA FAMILY HOUSING)
8) That all CASE MANAGERS dealing with the homeless have to actually try sleeping rough in a park and in uncomfortable vehicles for a week or two as part of their TRAINING. They'll know it's only temporary which isn't the same as a homeless experience, but it might make them think twice about throwing people out or teach them some empathy.
9) That SHELTERS FOR SINGLE PEOPLE without dependents and shelters for people who've always been law abiding and clean living be established. If you're a single mother with children you're always a priority when it comes to funds. If you're a drug addict there are funds. Single people and people who've been law abiding and clean living are the LEAST SERVED and our society has changed. Millions are now never married.
10) That those who GIVE to charity thoroughly investigate any non-profit they wish to give to.

RUMOR REACHES US OF HOMELESS RESOURCES COMPETITOR OUT TO GET US!
Competitor? For POVERTY ACTIVISTS there may be differences of opinion but if you're on the same side of the issue, wanting to eliminate poverty and homelessness, are you actually competing?
A rumor reached us that an individual staying at San Fernando Valley shelter that you've read about in these posts has a HOMELESS RESOURCES web site which takes contributions of money has been putting us down. Meanwhile, the story goes, this person is applying for and taking Government Benefits and not reporting the money.
...
It's not like we aren't aware that there are lists of homeless resources to be found other places. In fact there are just so many lists of resources.
We hope that what we have to offer here is MORE THAN the lists. It's real easy to pretend that each and every homeless shelter or resource provider actually has a heart, has our best interests in mind, and DOES EXACTLY WHAT THEY CLAIM TO DO WHEN THEY TAKE CONTRIBUTIONS.
MOST OF THE HOMELESS RESOURCE PLACES PRIDE THEMSELVES IN HANDING OVER LISTS OF OTHER RESOURCES - often out of date information or repetitive since they have PHOTOCOPIED pages of the same lists. There are also medical clinics that claim to help the homeless but who do not advocate but who basically think they are helping because they 'send" people to another organization. You can do a whole hell of a lot of go-sees trying to get help.
When we've told some these places that there was inaccurate information on their lists, well, months go by and they don't correct the list. One Burbank location had a shelter listed in North Hollywood that had gone out of business more than 2 years before! One food bank gave us a list and half the places we called had changed info.
It's not easy to keep up with all the changes.
WE THINK THAT SOME ORGANIZATIONS HAVE NON-PROFIT STATUS AND TAKE DONATIONS JUST SO THEY CAN REFER PEOPLE SOMEWHERE ELSE.
Then there is 211 or 311 phone help lines or one of those 800 numbers where you can call and get the latest information. Supposedly. One person we know called 211 and followed through calling 5 referrals who were supposed to have furniture. None did. It was all misinformation.
As much as we want to help you, we know that information can go out of date quickly, so while we hope that you'll find a link to that help when you need it, WE HOPE WE WILL INSPIRE YOU TO KEEP ON ASKING QUESTIONS, KEEP ON MAKING THOSE PHONE CALLS, KEEP ON SHOWING UP FOR THOSE INTERVIEWS, while knowing how difficult, exhausting, and numbing that is. We do want your comments, suggestions, testimonials, and updates!

PALO VERDE PR STARING STEPHANIE KLASKY-GAMER CEO
NOTE: THE ORIGINAL VIDEO POSTED HERE WAS TAKEN DOWN OFF YOUTUBE.
SOUNDS GOOD... now are these apartments really the rent-paying resident's or is this another shelter where anyone can just knock on your door and walk right in? Do you have to come home every night? So you have to sign in or tell a case manager where you were or why you weren't home? What about the restrictions on visitors?
How do you explain the fact that some residents have been at the LAFH Valley shelter for 4, 5, 6, and 7 years? What percentage of people you intake end up in their own apartment in a year? At all?

SUNLAND HOMELESS FACING GENOCIDE BY THE LIKES OF CITY COUNCIL MEMBER BOWLING : HOMELESS DECREASING REAL ESTATE VALUES
That's our take on this article that hit the front page of the DAILY NEWS, this morning, with the title 'Homeless Descend on Sunland Park as Crackdowns Shuffle Transients From Place to Place.' Written by journalist Susan Abram who has the homeless beat over at the Daily News, who you can contact if you'd like to testify to the reality of living at Los Angeles Family Housing shelter, where people have been known to live for many years, all the time under the threat of being kicked out, before they get housing. We'd also like the reader to read our other posts, including the scandle at Palo Verde apartments in Sun Valley, to get a more well rounded story than the one linked to here.

SUSAN LEST GETS A HOME IN SUN VALLEY AFTER MONTHS IN HER CAR IN NORTH HOLLYWOOD
We're linking to the recent article in the Daily News, front page, which features an article about Susan Lest, who got housing through LA Family Housing. We're truly happy that Susan has had a short stay in her car and got help so quickly. She was a senior citizen effected by rising costs and the recession and lost her Valley Village apartment.
We know there are more funds and help available for seniors then there are for younger people, and we know of many people whose case manager put big pressure on them to "go mental" in order to get SSI or SSDI, who felt they had to cheat the system to get housing.
We caution you then, when reading journalist Susan Abram's peice, to consider that it comes off as a PR piece for LA Family Housing. Susan's experience is not the experience of every person that LA Family Housing helps. We know this, because we get a lot of complaints on the street and elsewhere.

UPDATED! A DISASTER OF PLANNING ! LA FAMILY HOUSING AWARDS THE KEYS TO GLEN OAKS APARTMENTS IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS
UPDATE : BELOW IS THE ORIGINAL POST
Promises were made. Some promises were kept.
This week final decisions were made about which homeless sheltered at Los Angeles Family Housing and other County of Mental Health Programs will live at GLEN OAKS.
LA Family personnel, wearing their blue T-shirts, were there to oversee the hanging of blinds and installation of furniture. There are 60 units and by Christmas most of them will be lived in, leaving vacancies that the LA Family Housing wait list people will quickly take. We know that many residents have waited over a year, even two or three years, to get those keys, under threat of being terminated the whole time.
We're waiting to hear from new residents about their experience living at GLEN OAKS.
How involved in your personal life will employees (case management) of LA FAMILY HOUSING be? If you have problems with other residents will they be involved in the resolution? What do you have to do to get kicked out? (We hate to bring that up!)
We wish the best to all of you who have come this far to get housing. We hope you will be happy, healthy, and see this residency as a stepping stone to greater independence and the kind of life you really want to live!
By the way, word on the street is that LA FAMILY HOUSING has just bought another building but is still claiming they have no money to provide promised deposit money for residents moving into Section 8 and other housing! Right!
HERE IS THE UPDATE! SHAMEFULLY and ALMOST UNBELIEVABLY, THE GLEN OAKS MOVE IN HAS TURNED OUT TO BE A DISASTER IN PLANNING! A GOOD NUMBER OF RESIDENTS WHO HAVE BEEN LIVING IN SHELTER CONDITIONS WAITING TO BE MOVED, TOLD IT WOULD BE OCTOBER, NO AUGUST, NO IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS 2011, MOVED TO GLEN OAKS, but before they could get comfortable or pop a champagne cork in celebration, THEY WERE TOLD THEY HAD NOT BEEN APPROVED AND WERE MOVED BACK TO THE SHELTER! HOW COULD THIS HAPPEN? ARE WE TO BELIEVE THAT FROM CEO STEPHANIE DOWN TO JOHN THE DIRECTOR TO THE CASE MANAGERS NO ONE KNEW THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS FOR MOVING RESIDENTS INTO THE BUILDING. AGAIN, HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE?

LA FAMILY HOUSING CASE MANAGERS REACH OUT TO HOMELESS IN THE PARKS BUT CAN'T HELP THE HOMELESS THEY ALREADY HAVE IN THEIR SHELTER
So we've been hearing the stories on the street about this for a few months now.
LA FAMILY HOUSING boasts that it's the biggest and best shelter in Los Angeles County, and has case managers outreaching by appearing in known homeless locations to hand out their business cards and make their little pitch that they can help BUT THE SHELTER HAS BEEN TERMINATING (THROWING OUT) RESIDENTS THEY PROMISED TO HELP LEFT AND RIGHT. Some of these people are now in other shelters, in cars, in parks, and in abandoned buildings. We don't want to pick on LA Family Housing, just that it's kind of like the Titanic. Other ships sunk but they didn't boast that they wouldn't.
The shelter puts out a newsletter that boasts about their success stories and gives some numbers which must be real impressive to all those donors who are philanthropists.
But what we want to know is HOW MANY PEOPLE DOES THE SHELTER TAKE IN and terminate without housing? Maybe those success numbers aren't so impressive after all.
IF YOU ARE A CURRENT or PAST RESIDENT OF LA FAMILY HOUSING or ANY OTHER SHELTER and had been promised housing and been terminated without it, we want to hear your story.
You can use comments to leave your story or your contact info without being identified if you don't want to be. Just let us know that you do or don't want with the comment.

BIG SUNDAY CHILL PILL BAND HUGE HIT AT LAFH
Sunday the 15th of May 2011 was Big Sunday (link above) at LAFH. The shelter's side for HOMELESS SINGLES (one of few in Southern California) was the recipient of BIG SUNDAY, a group of volunteers, that cooked a barbecue dinner with dogs, burgers, chicken, and all the fixings, and music by 80's cover band CHILL PILL.
Residents want to say thanks especially because that SINGLE SIDE of the SHELTER rarely gets the tickets, parties, or donations, that the FAMILY SIDE DOES.
CHILL PILL brought back the memories of Van Halen, Blondie, Billy Idol, and more.
They're an exciting cover band, and they like to play for money too.

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA ASSOCIATION OF NON PROFIT HOUSING HUD REPORT ON HOMELESSNESS
This is Housing and Urban Development's report on the state of homelessness - more rural and suburban poor. We are hearing that all HUD FUNDED SHELTERS/BEDS are going to be offering less stay time. no matter what shelter or program. All or most non military or non mental health program residents of one local shelter's Transitional Living Program have been given 30 days notice. According to our source, the director of Los Angeles Family Housing, informed all TLP residents of the change about a week ago, saying there would be no more waiting for SSI. Residents at that shelter were short noticed that they needed to attend a meeting and refusal to attend would mean automatic 30 day notice to terminate. A couple weeks before that all shelter residents - no matter what program - were tested for drug use and again were told that refusal to test would be an automatic termination. According to our source, medical marijuana prescription owners are allowed to stay though they tested positive but OPIATE users (heroin) were terminated. Lots of upset among residents at that shelter, but more homeless need to be given a 90 day chance to turn their lives around.

SEEN RECENTLY - TWO OF MICHAEL JACKSON'S CHILDREN DONATING MONEY TO LOS ANGELES FAMILY HOUSING
The rumors are strong that recently two (of deceased pop star) Michael Jackson's children made a personal visit to the big non profit LOS ANGELES FAMILY HOUSING to donate money to the shelter.
This is an opportunity for residents past and present to comment on their lives at the shelter, which operates a family side and a single side. You can leave a comment without signing your name. Please be truthful.

LOS ANGELES FAMILY HOUSING BREAKS GROUND ON MENTAL HEALTH HOUSING INSTITUTION
Los Angeles Family Housing plans to break ground on September 30, 2010 for GLENOAKS GARDENS, intended to house mentally ill homeless, at 8925 Glenoaks Blvd, Sun Valley, California.
Thanks to M. for this tip. The Daily News article we found with a picture of the place and other information - like how they got the money for it - is linked!

LOS ANGELES FAMILY HOUSING
WHY NOT ASK HOMELESS PEOPLE WHO HAVE LIVED AT LAFH if your donations will really be well spent? This is an advertisement. It is meant to solicit funds from you? We are currently based in Southern California and we hear complaints about LAFH's shelter on the streets.

CORNERSTONE MENTAL HEALTH - HEARTLESS or DO YOU HAVE INSURANCE?
WORD ON THE STREET
We're getting reports that CORNERSTONE MENTAL HEALTH, an agency that is supposed to be helping the mentally ill homeless, looses heart when it comes to those who should not be outpatients because they cannot supervise daily medications. They take in homeless, and they put them back out.
Cornerstone is paying Los Angeles Family Housing to house a few dozen of their out patients and there is no psychiatric nurse or staff to supervise. When the patient gets off their medication or their medication is not properly prescribed and they go crazy on the property, the security guards and staff at Los Angeles Family Housing are not trained to deal.
Some of these mentally ill homeless people are thrown out of LAFH and CORNERSTONE! It's a punishment because they cannot comply with taking drugs prescribed for them. Ah, are they mentally ill or aren't they?
We hope that CORNERSTONE MENTAL HEALTH and places like it, who like to bill the county and the state medical programs or a patient's own insurance, will ask themselves why they are in the HOMELESS BUSINESS?
UPDATE: Thanks Lucy for telling us that this post was not visible. WE ALSO HAVE AN UPDATE: WE'VE BEEN HEARING A LOT OF COMPLAINS ABOUT CORNERSTONE so we plan to post a new one soon about this place.

Los Angeles Family Housing News Breaking.... ARE HOMELESS RESIDENTS SLAVES ?
We've heard that Los Angeles Family Housing will be making it mandatory for residents to work twice a week around the place or be kicked out. While we are all for volunteering to show your appreciation when you want to, we're learning that many of the residents have the Veteran's or a Mental Health Facility paying for their beds.
We can only say this. When people are forced to work under threat of the streets, for no pay, that is slavery. Slavery went out in the mid 19th century.
Stipends anyone? This isn't prison is it?
If any residents are reading this, please, we need more information!

THANKSGIVING LA FAMILY HOUSING - GIVES OUT EVICTION NOTICES !
We've picked up our first ugly rumor! Please verify!
It seems that a caseworker for Los Angeles Family Housing actually drove to the shelter in North Hollywood, California, with a stack of eviction notices ON THANKSGIVING DAY, his day off, letting up to 30 homeless know that they had to be out on December first, the reasoning being that THE COLD WEATHER SHELTER in SYLMAR opens December first!
While some of these people know they have broken Rules, word has it that the new director John Horn and upper management are behind making RULES that are ARBITRARY AND RIDICULOUS in order to clear the house, which has a wait list of over 400 people... Further, we hear that the past director who had more heart, Jerome Nilson, is now at some branch of PATH...
