"Los Angeles County's homeless population dropped 3 percent in 2010 on the previous count, despite the economic downturn, according to a report released Tuesday.
More than 51,000 people were registered as homeless in Los Angeles County in 2010, said the report by the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA), which counts the homeless population once every two years."
"The report highlighted that 18 percent of the 51,340 homeless were war veterans, who had a higher rate of chronic homelessness than the general population.
The report also found the homeless population was aging, with nearly 34 percent of chronic homeless persons aged 55 or older, which would increase the public cost of homelessness."
