HUFF POST : ASHLEY MOSLEY : NO INTERN PAY - NO PROTECTION full interesting article
..."When many people think of unpaid internships, they assume the only thing missing from the opportunity is pay and benefits. This couldn't be further from the truth. Unpaid internships also lack another crucial element: Protection from harassment.
Sure, you may treat your unpaid interns like employees, doling out immersive, hands-on projects, mentorship and technical skills training. But at the end of the day, unpaid interns aren't "real" employees because they have no legal protection that comes with an employee contract and salary.
According to a recent InternMatch survey, 36.9 percent of companies still offer unpaid internships or internships that pay less than minimum wage. And while proponents of unpaid internships typically speak to the career-changing experiences these opportunities provide, this argument hardly stands when it comes to the lack of civil rights afforded to unpaid interns. "

CITY OF LA BACKS DOWN - HOMELESS POSSESSIONS MAY NOT BE CONFISCATED! GET WITH IT SANTA ANA!
LOS ANGELES DROPS APPEAL IN HOMELESS PROPERTY SUIT
Eight Skid Row residents filed suit in 2011, accusing city workers, accompanied by police, of confiscating and dumping their personal possessions including medication, identification, cellphones and toiletries.
City officials said allowing homeless people to leave belongings on sidewalks creates a health hazard and violates municipal ordinances.
In a 2-1 decision, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled the confiscations violated homeless people's Fourth Amendment protection against unreasonable seizures. The belongings could be taken only if they posed an immediate public health threat or were evidence of a crime, the ruling said.
NOW WE HOPE THAT SOME SHELTERS WHERE MANAGEMENT THROWS PEOPLE'S POSSESSIONS IN DUMPSTERS GET THE HINT!
Orange County Register = HOMELESS AT SANTA ANA - POLICE CONFISCATING BELONGINGS
Homeless people around the Civic Center say police have stepped up enforcement in recent months and have been confiscating their personal belongings.
They have organized into a group and meet on Fridays to discuss issues and needs of the homeless, said the group’s spokesman, Tim Houchen.
A handful of homeless people who congregate at the Civic Center asked the City Council on Tuesday night to implement a moratorium on camping citations and asked that the Police Department stop confiscating their personal items. One man said police have been conducting “midnight raids” where the homeless congregate.

STORAGE UNITS TO SHELTER WEALTH? SOUTH DAKOTA ISN'T EVEN OFF SHORE!
WASHINGTON POST - SOUTH DAKOTA STORAGE LOCKERS FOR WEALTHY
"Among the nation’s billionaires, one of the most sought-after pieces of real estate right now is a quiet storefront in Sioux Falls, S.D.
A branch of Chicago’s Pritzker family rents space here, down the hall from the Minnesota clan that controls the Radisson hotel chain, and other rooms held by Miami and Hong Kong money...
Don't look for any heiresses in this former five-and-dime. Most days, the small offices that represent these families are shut. Even empty, they provide their owners with an important asset — a South Dakota address for their trust funds.
In the past four years, the amount of money administered by South Dakota trust companies such as these has tripled to $121 billion, almost all of it from out of state. The families needn’t move to South Dakota, or deposit their money at a local bank, or even touch down in the private jet. Little more than renting an address in Sioux Falls is required to take advantage of South Dakota’s tax-friendly trust laws."

OBAMA CARE MAY FORCE HOMELESS PROGRAMS TO DO IT WAY DIFFERENT
Since we've heard a lot about how shelters and other programs that promise housing do things we have some strong opinions about how access to medical care that is not HOMELESS HEALTH CARE but MAIN STREAM HEALTH CARE may just change things.
Some programs push their "residents" into making permanent disability their whole goal in life, even when they are young and healthy. In this day and age it is simply not true that most homeless have substance abuse problems or serious mental health issues. We have some serious questions about why these populations should be living together in shelters, since we have heard of women being raped in shelters, security guards who are looking the other way as resident pimps harass young women, etc.
WE TOTALLY UNDERSTAND WHY SOME PEOPLE PREFER NOT TO GO TO A SHELTER PROGRAM TO GET HOUSING.
We've met the people who are in sleeping bags in parks where so called social workers come and give out their business cards and a lot of promises. We met people who are never taken in because they are too smart, not sick enough, have the integrity and honesty to not want to "play the game" of faking illness. So we know that these shelters and other programs DO NOT WANT YOU TO GET WELL OR BE WELL.
We hear it all the time about shelter case managers taking in only those who are already on disability, pressuring others to apply, even having other residents pressure them, threatening people who are having their first experience with homelessness that if they don't go to COUNTY MENTAL HEALTH and FAKE IT they will be kicked out. Do they say those words? Maybe not.
Instead they order a person to one of their sympathetic therapists, maybe even one who isn't licensed, because it you don't then they will kick you out. The fear and anxiety that these homeless business professions create then hurts your mental health.
HOMELESS "HEALTH CARE" STINKS!
These so called social workers or case managers are a part of the problem of mental health program fraud that turns people who are either not mentally ill, at least not incurably so, into mentally ill patients for the rest of their lives so they can use mental illness as a way to get you SSI. Then you're supposed to use the SSI to pay your rent.
So, DO YOU REALLY WANT TO RUIN THE REST OF YOUR LIFE, in order to get housing? This is the terrible decision you find yourself tossing and turning all night trying to figure out.
We say NO!
We only wish the police would understand this! Many people are staying in their cars rather than face shelter life.
IF YOU HAVE ACCESS TO MEDICAL CARE, you may not become homeless in the first place.
You may be able to keep a job. You may take care of a health problem before it becomes a chronic or preexisting condition. YOU MAY NOT WAIT MONTHS OR YEARS while trying to keep going at a shelter for the medical care you need. YOU MIGHT EVEN DEAL WITH SOME MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS WHO ARE COMPETENT and HAVE INTEGRITY!

TRADER JOES DONATES TO FOOD BANKS - CAN YOU BUDGET TO BUY THEIR FOOD ON YOUR CALFRESH ALLOWANCE?
We get hundreds of hits on our links to California State Calfresh, also called food stamps, Snap, and EBT. We know that those of you who go to Food Banks and some shelters, eat Trader Joe's donations. Trader Joes is a store that has some fresh fruit, wine and cheeses, coffee, a wide variety of prepared frozen foods, ready made sandwiches and so on, and most items in our opinion are moderate to pricy. We think that the quality of the products is better and that there is an eye to nutrition and quality by Trader Joes.
SO WE WENT SHOPPING AT TRADER JOES TO SEE WHAT THE STORE HAS THAT WILL ALLOW US TO KEEP TO ABOUT FIVE DOLLARS A DAY WHICH OUR CALFRESH ALLOWANCE BUDGET IS.
HERE ARE THE ITEMS WE FOUND TO BE A GOOD DEAL and keeping within that budget.
1) FROZEN VEGETABLES that are not organic. About $1.50 a bag. Broccoli and Green Beans.
2) CANNED TURKEY CHILI about $2 a can.
3) CANNED BLACK BEANS, WHITE KIDNEY BEANS, and RED KIDNEY BEANS. Around a dollar a can.
4) MULTI GRAIN PANCAKE MIX. $2 a box. Just tried it. It's great!
5) PASTA - About $1.25 a box.
6) TOMATO SAUCES - JARS - about on par with other store brands except when other stores have their sales.
7) EGGS - about on par with other stores and says no hormones. About $2 dozen depending on size.
8) PARMESAN - ROMANO CHEESE in a shaker container - slightly less expensive than Kraft brand sold elsewhere. About $3.50.
Would like to see larger containers available.
9) BANANAS - always 19 Cents each - very good price.
10) CHEESE - have to stay to the more basic varieties to find prices competitive with other stores, like Cheddar.
11) Yogurt - very competitive prices.

ARE YOU HOMELESS OR A SURVIVALIST?
We overheard a conversation. A homeless man was saying that his attitude is that he isn't a homeless but a survivalist.
Is the LABEL "homeless" ruining our lives and killing our spirits?

HOMELESS ON THE HIGH DESERT BLOG WELCOMED TO EXPOSE HOMELESSNESS
HOMELESS ON THE HIGH DESERT BLOG added to our list!
The High Desert is my Home, I’ll never be “Homeless”.
What a long, strange trip it’s been.
As product of mid-fifties promiscuous pregnancy and sixties serial southern California divorce, I am of a Unique Generation. My parents didn’t do me any favors, there’s no silver spoon stickin’ out of my ass.
I grew up on The High Cascade huntin’ and fishin’, fightin and fuckin’, and pretty much mindin’ my own damned business. Had a gun when I was eight, a pony at ten; was ridin’ line on a cattle ranch at fifteen, just me and a couple of horses, a couple of dogs, a bunch of cows and a whole lot of high desert sky. My dad, uncles, grand-dads were all VFW, as am I; worked in the woods, in the sawmill or out on the ranch, as have I. I’m pretty sure the whole family – hell, the whole town of Gilchrest, maybe even all of Klamath County- voted for Ike, twice. I would have. Grew up with pretty strong American – Western American – values, I think; grew up in a country, a culture, fearing

SKID ROW WOMAN ARRESTED OVER 100 TIMES FOR BEING HOMELESS!
WAVE NEWSPAPERS - KEEPING SKID ROW SAFE FROM HOMELESS WOMAN read Betty's full article!
By Betty Pleasant, Contributing Editor
"Come along with me on a ride through Skid Row, to the area’s police station, the criminal courthouse, the jail and back again, which is the route on which the city’s merry-go-round has taken Ann Moody, a 59-year-old Black homeless woman, 108 times for sleeping on a Skid Row street in violation of the city of Los Angeles’ Municipal Code 4118D, which makes it illegal to sit, sleep or lie on a public sidewalk.
Moody, who came to Los Angeles from Clarksdale, Miss., has been arrested by the LAPD 108 times for sleeping in a tent on the corner of Sixth Street and Towne Avenue in the downtown Skid Row district. She has been sleeping there ever since she lost her job as a word processor for Security Pacific and became homeless in 2006 — the same year that then-Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and then-Police Chief Bill Bratton launched their much-heralded Safer Cities Initiative, which they said would be implemented by “bringing 110 extra police officers to Skid Row to make it the most policed community in the world.”"

JOEL JOHN ROBERTS WOULD GIVE TWO HOMELESS TO EACH LOS ANGELES MILLIONAIRE TO SUPPORT!
HUFF POST - JOEL JOHN ROBERTS - A MILLION REASONS WHY LOS ANGELES COULD END HOMELESSNESS link here to full article.
Joel John Roberts WE LOVE YOU!
...Sadly, we are also the land with the most unsheltered people in the whole country. We have 58,000 people who have no homes, and two-thirds are living on the streets.
Such irony. A city with 126,000 millionaires also possesses 58,000 people without homes.
WE GOT ONE QUESTION JOEL... DID YOU COUNT ALL THE PEOPLE WHO BOUGHT HOMES IN THE 50's and 60's WHEN THEY WERE STILL AFFORDABLE, now selling them for a HALF MILLION or MORE as MILLIONAIRES?
