CURT'S KITCHEN SAN PEDRO - KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS, SAN PEDRO CATHOLIC LAY MINISTRY, HELEN GROVE, PARIS THOMAS and OTHERS SERVE THE HOMELESS
DAILYBREEZE - SAN PEDRO MAN WHO KNEW HOMELESSNESS PAYS IT FORWARD
EXCERPT: About Paris Thomas
The 37-year-old has been sober from alcohol for two years and sober from drugs for almost a decade. A motorcycle ministry helped him overcome his addictions and get back on his feet, and Thomas emerged from the experience determined to lead a life of service.
The lifelong San Pedro resident decided to reach out to different congregations in town — Thomas was raised Catholic, once identified as Mormon and now considers himself a nondenominational born again Christian — about their ministries for the poor.
“I talked to Father Augustine at Holy Trinity and I asked him what the Catholics were doing for the homeless in San Pedro, and he gave me Helen’s phone number,” he said.
Helen Grove, founder of the San Pedro Catholic Worker lay ministry group, has served meals to the homeless in San Pedro for over 20 years. In 2013, she was gifted with the rent-free use of a 4,500-square-foot kitchen-equipped building that would become Curt’s Kitchen, named after her late husband.

HOMELESS COUNT 2015 (CENSUS) IN LA THE NEXT THREE DAYS : DO YOU WANT TO BE COUNTED?
http://www.latimes.com/opinion/editorials/la-ed-homeless-count-los-angeles-20150112-story.html full story
On the nights of the count, officials will also take a tally of people staying at shelters. And, importantly, they will send professional outreach workers into the streets over several weeks — starting Tuesday — to interview more than 4,000 homeless people and compile demographic data on them...This year, outreach workers will ask a wide range of questions that go well beyond age and ethnicity and include everything from gender identity to disabilities and medical conditions. Homeless people will be asked whether they were victims of domestic violence or whether they've served time in prison. If they're veterans, what wars did they fight in? What government services or benefits do they receive? Have they been denied a shelter bed and if so, why? How did they lose their housing?
n recent years, the count has shown that while the overall number of homeless hasn't changed much — in 2013 the total number counted on the streets and in shelters was 39,463 — there have been significant demographic changes. Family homelessness was down between 2011 and 2013. So was veteran homelessness, apparently thanks to hard work by non-profits, the county and the federal government. When homeless authority officials noticed in the last count that more homeless youths than expected were found in the Antelope Valley and South L.A., they worked on finding service providers with expertise in dealing with young people who could go to those areas.
***************
YOU MAY NOT WANT TO BE COUNTED, recorded as homeless, because your name will become part of a public record. Maybe, if you aren't asking anyone for any help, or if you've reached out for help and not gotten any, you would rather have your privacy.
ONE THING WE KNOW FOR SURE IS THAT THE COUNT WILL NOT BE ACCURATE. THERE ARE MANY HIDDEN HOMELESS!
BASED ON PREVIOUS COUNTS, LOS ANGELES HAS THE HIGHEST HOMELESS POPULATION IN THE COUNTRY OTHER THAN NEW YORK CITY.
THERE ARE AND HAVE BEEN THOUSANDS WHO WILL NOT GET HELP, DESPITE SUCH COUNTS.
SPECIFICALLY, THEY WILL NOT GET INTO DECENT SHELTERS OR INTO LOW INCOME HOUSING. THERE HASN'T BEEN ENOUGH SHELTERS OR LOW INCOME HOUSING OPPORTUNITIES FOR YEARS HERE so it may not matter how many thousands are (still) on the streets, in vehicles, on sofas, on floors, camping in the mountains, etc.
HOMELESS SINGLE WOMEN WITH CHILDREN have the greatest chance of finding shelter and governmental help.
SINGLE PEOPLE, if not senior citizens, have the WORST CHANCE. Many shelters will not even take single people. And if you are not religious or not Christian, and you don't want to be preached to and "converted" you have very little chance of finding a shelter to take you.
EVEN THE ONES WHO SAY THEY DO NOT DO THIS DO. They take government funds, sponsor Bible Studies, and tend to favor those who are "believers" which to us, is reality, and stinks.
Three nights and thousands of homeless to be counted on L.A. County's streets
Some Excerpts:
"In teams of two to four, volunteers will walk the streets looking for homeless individuals as well as signs of encampments — a makeshift tent, a vehicle with something covering the windows, maybe an item of clothing. Volunteer counters don't knock on windows or peer under tent flaps. They don't talk to the people they find; they record only what they see. They are trained before they go out and are encouraged to stop if they feel unsafe. In some areas, an undercover law enforcement officer may be assigned to a team....On the nights of the count, officials will also take a tally of people staying at shelters. U.S. VETS ACTIVISM - LOS ANGELES HAS 6,300 VETS ON THE STREETS - NEARLY 20% OF THOSE LIVING IN LOCAL SHELTERS
USVETS.ING - INFORMATION ON ACTIVISM inc STAND DOWNS

Los Angeles County remains the epicenter of homelessness in the U.S. Homeless vets account for nearly 20% of the people living on the streets and in shelters in Los Angeles. The overall cost of living in LA is 36% above the national average, with housing costs among the top ten most expensive in the nation.

PATRICK BRADLEY DESIGNS HOUSE OUT OF FOUR SHIPPING CONTAINERS - NOT CHEAP BUT FAB!
DAILY MAIL - GRAND DESIGNS - SHIPPING CONTAINER HOUSE
Farmer and architect Patrick Bradley wasn't homeless or penniless, but what he did with four shipping containers is outstanding and inspiration for those seeking some unconventional or alternative housing. Some land and one shipping container would do for many!

TEAR DOWN THE HOMELESS CAMPS AND DISPERSE PEOPLE TO WHERE? 60 % INCREASE ON BANNING PUBLIC CAMPING SINCE 2011!
HUFFPOST - BANNING HOMELESS CAMPS JUST DISPERSES THE ISSUE by Mary Wisniewski for Reuters
EXCERPT: Across the United States, local governments are moving to prevent outdoor camping by the homeless, according to advocates for the nation's nearly 600,000 homeless, estimated by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Government officials say they are trying to limit outdoor camping for the health and safety of the homeless and other residents. But homeless advocates say the bans are not a solution to homelessness and further stigmatize the poor. (What a joke!)
Over a third of U.S. cities impose citywide bans on public camping, a 60 percent increase in such ordinances since 2011, according to a 2014 survey of 187 cities by the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty.
More than half the cities surveyed, 57 percent, prohibit camping in certain public places. Such bans have climbed by 16 percent over the past three years, the study found.

RUSSIA'S HOMELESS ARE ALL COLD WEATHER PEOPLE - RUSSIA HITS EXPOSE HOMELESSNESS BLOG EVERY HOUR
Using Feedjit, we learned that RUSSIA is MONITORING this blog... we mean hits that are automated on the hour or half hour for days on end. If we thought someone was actually READING the blog then we could think that maybe they would learn something, maybe be inspired.
MAYBE YOU WOULD LIKE TO KNOW THAT HOMELESS IN RUSSIA are dealing with COLD weather six months out of the year and sometimes there are 17 hours of night. So people turn to VODKA though some feel it is VODKA that brought them to the street. Reading around the subject we learned that JUST LIKE IN THE UNITED STATES coming out of prison with nowhere to go and unemployment are two of the other leading causes. There are also lots and lots of Street Children and we don't mean just Run Away Teenagers, we mean little kids. Since there are few if any homeless shelters, most Russian homeless are Street Homeless.

ABC INTERNATIONAL - MOSCOW HOMELESS WALK ALL NIGHT TO AVOID FREEZING TO DEATH
MOSCOW Dec. 24, 2012 by KIRIT RADIA and TANYA STUKALO
via World News
DR ELIZAVETA GLINKA is one of the VERY FEW who care about Homeless in Moscow.
"After a half dozen years providing medical care to Moscow's homeless, Dr. Elizaveta Glinka, or Dr. Liza as she is known, has seen everything. The most common injuries are frostbitten extremities and burns from unsafe heaters.
The worst, she says, are the frozen bodies she and her fellow volunteers find.
Every day she sees homeless patients in her clinic, part of a charity she runs called "Just Help." Every day about 100 people come there for food. A couple times a week she and her team take the van out to reach more people in need.
As men and women crowded around her van she doled out medicine, clothing, advice, and a hopeful smile. This was a good day. Someone donated a jar of caviar and she was able to spoon out some of the delicacy to the needy."

BASTA and DANIEL BRAMZON and THE EVICTION DEFENSE INDUSTRY in LOS ANGELES
LA WEEKLY - SUPERMAN OF THE RENTERS - DANIEL BRAMZON by Hillel Aron
EXCERPTS
With margins like that, it's easy to fall behind. Some 64,000 to 73,000 people are evicted in L.A. each year — a population equal to that of Redondo Beach. But before the sheriff shows up at their door with a padlock, they're called here, to "unlawful detainer" (legalese for eviction) court. Every day, more than 50 cases move through Department 94. ... Indeed, Basta's business is booming, as Bramzon himself is proud to admit. It has just hired a 14th lawyer, and it has offices in the eviction hot spots of Los Angeles, Long Beach and Lancaster. In 2012, the firm reported $1.5 million in revenue. This year, according to Bramzon, it will surpass $2 million. According to publicly available tax forms, Bramzon himself made only $30,000 from his work at Basta in 2012. On the side, he has a small private practice, which he says "pays the bills." ...
The landlords and their attorneys bristle at the sheer brazenness of Basta's business model.

POPE FRANCIS GIVES OUT 400 SLEEPING BAGS TO HOMELESS ON HIS BIRTHDAY
THINK PROGRESS - POPE GIVES OUT SLEEPING BAGS TO HOMELESS by Scott Keyes
EXCERPT:
Francis has also been quietly sneaking out of the Vatican to minister to homeless residents living on the streets.
Addressing poverty and economic inequality has become a central theme of Francis’ nearly two-year tenure. He has attacked unbridled wealth accumulation, pointing out that Bible calls for a “legitimate redistribution of economic benefits” in order to care for the poor. “How can it be that it is not a news item when an elderly homeless person dies of exposure, but it is news when the stock market loses two points?” said Francis last year. He has also been highly critical of trickle-down economics.

EXPOSE HOMELESSNESS BLOGSPOT - UNITED STATES OF AMERICA - A COMMUNITY SERVICE BLOG
If you've never hit on us before, EXPOSE HOMELESSNESS is a COMMUNITY SERVICE BLOG focused on the homeless of the United States of America. We are based in Southern California, which is the homeless capital of the United States, but we are interested in what's going on around the state and through the country and the world.
NOW THAT YOU ARE HERE, WE WOULD LIKE YOU TO STICK AROUND LONG ENOUGH TO READ THREE MORE POSTS BESIDES THE ONE THAT BROUGHT YOU TO US!
Reading the news, we're aware that people are being driven out of homeless camp grounds all over the country by small and large cities who have little to no options for temporary shelters, temporary housing, or low income housing programs, and that some of them are putting people on buses to other towns with nothing more than their clothes on their back and a bag lunch. We consider these "Round Ups" and "Shut Downs" and "Clean Ups" as well as "Greyhound Therapy" to be akin to ETHNIC CLEANSING that happens in other countries where a minority group is unwanted. In other parts of the world ETHNIC CLEANSING involves the theft of person's possessions (like when camps are mowed or police or other authorities take a homeless person's possessions) and often violent bloody death. Here the deaths take longer and are less obvious when it's about lack of health care and dangerous living conditions that kill.

We are always interested in stories you may wish to share about your actual experience of being homeless, living in a shelter, living in an RV or car, or depending on a non-profit that takes money from governmental agencies or donations with the stated goal of helping the homeless.
